The significance of the van den Bergh reaction.

چکیده
Introduction A REASSESSMENT of the clinical significance of the van den Bergh reaction is rendered highly desirable by the development during the last 15 years of new methods for the determination of bilirubin in body fluids as well as for the estimation of the proportions of the alleged direct and indirect forms of bilirubin. Moreover, modern photo-electric devices permit an accurate measurement of the rate of formation of colour in the van den Bergh diazo reaction, and thereby offer a more objective means of distinguishing between so-called prompt, biphasic, and delayed direct van den Bergh reactions given by jaundiced sera. Van den Bergh and Muller (1916) showed that the presence of alcohol was not necessary in the production of the red pigment azobilirubin by the action of a solution of diazotized sulphanilic acid (the Ehrlich diazo reagent) on bile or sera from patients with obstructive

The separation of serum pigments giving the direct and indirect van den Bergh reaction.
Forty years ago van den Bergh developed a method for the estimation of bilirubin in serum by combining it in alcoholic solution with freshly diazotized sulphanilic acid. Shortly afterwards van den Bergh and Muller (1916) noted that by the omission of alcohol they could distinguish two types of reaction. Pigments from bile and serum from cases of obstructive jaundice developed a colour in the ab...
متن کاملThe standardization of the Van Den Bergh reaction for serum bilirubin.
N ATTEMPT TO STANDAJIDIZE a micromethod for the determination of serum bilirubin in premature infants, difficulty was encountered in the use of commercially available bilirubin preparations. Duplication of calibration curves previously reported in the literature could not be achieved, and data available on the van den Bergh reaction were not helpful in the solution of this problem. The persisti...
متن کاملSustainable nations: what do aggregate indexes tell us?
What is a ‘sustainable nation’ and how can we identify and rank ‘sustainable nations?’ Are nations producing and consuming in a sustainable way? Although several aggregate indexes have been proposed to answer such questions, comprehensive and internationally comparable data are not available for most of these. This paper quantitatively compares three aggregate indexes of sustainability: the Wor...
متن کاملEnergy Conservation More Effective With Rebound Policy
This article sketches the problem of indirect energy use effects, also known as rebound, of energy conservation. There is widespread support for energy conservation, especially when it is voluntary, as this seems a cheap way to realize environmental and energy-climate goals. However, this overlooks the phenomenon of rebound. The topic of energy rebound has mainly attracted attention from energy...
متن کاملCxxxvi. the Isolation from Bile of a Pigment Having a Direct
THE pigments present in the blood-serum in jaundice were first differentiated by van den Bergh, who found that, whereas all icteric sera coupled with diazobenzene-p-sulphonic acid (Ehrlich's diazo-reagent) in the presence of alcohol, only certain of these sera would couple in simple aqueous solution. These diazo-reactions van den Bergh termed "indirect" and "direct" respectively, and it is now ...
